Sparkler radish is a cool season crop best sown directly 4-6 weeks before final spring frost or 4-6 weeks before first frost in fall. Pak Choi prefers rich, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0-7.5. Add plenty of organic matter. Provide regular, even moisture to avoid bitterness. This is a popular grower in cool climate areas. Sow seeds thinly, ½” deep, in rows 12-15” apart – the wider distance is best for growing semi-mature to full-sized plants.Gradually thin out seedlings to prevent overcrowding and give them more room to grows. The final spacings depend on what stage you're going to harvest them: 3-4” apart for baby leaves, 8” apart for semi-mature plants, 10-12” apart for mature plants. Keep well watered throughout the growing period to avoid bolting. Baby leaves are ready to harvest in as little as 30 days, while semi-mature to full-sized heads take 45–75 days.

Sow arugula seeds as early in spring as the soil can be worked, and every 2 weeks successively through early fall. Sow 1” apart about 1/4" deep in rows 12" apart. When seedlings are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin plants to 3-4" apart for best results.

Sow outdoors from early spring to early summer into well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Sow seeds thinly in ¼” deep drills, cover with soil and water gently. Space rows 6-12” apart. Germination can be slow, taking up to a month or more. Thin to 6” apart. Keep plants well watered, especially during hot, dry spells in summer. Harvest the leaves regularly, to encourage more to form. Impressively frost hardy, leaves can be harvested well into early winter. 

 

Organic Charentais Melon

Sow seeds outdoors, 6 - 8 seeds in 12" diameter hills, after danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed. Space hills 6' apart in all directions or, if space is limited, they’re happy to climb a trellis. Seeds will germinate in 

4-10 days. Thin to 3-4 plants per hill. Can also be started indoors 2-3 weeks before last frost. When ripe, their smooth, blue-green skin turns yellow, and the melons slip easily from their stems. If those signs of readiness are not enough, just the aroma of a ripe Charentais in the patch is a dead giveaway. The flavor is perfumed and tropically exotic, distinct from the more typical netted-skinned varieties.

Very hardy; overwinters well in most regions, doing well in both southern and northern states. Leeks like long sunny days to grow big and have few pests or diseases. Hilling your leeks will encourage longer shanks.

Directly sow seeds in April or once the soil is workable to at least 40°. You can also directly sow in early fall around September. Organic Lollo Rosso grows best as a cool season crop and is a fast-maturing annual. Lollo Rosso can be harvested as a "“cut and come again" crop. Be sure to pick outer leaves at 3”-6” long to prevent from growing too bitter.

Florence fennel is a cool-weather perennial grown as an annual. Fennel can be sown in the garden as early as 2 to 3 weeks before the average last frost date in spring. For autumn crops sow fennel in mid-to-late summer. Thin successful seedlings to 12” apart. Keep fennel on the dry side; the soil should be evenly moist but not wet. Florence fennel’s bulbous stalk can be harvested when it is 3 inches (7cm) or more in diameter.Cut the whole stalk like celery just below the point where individual stalks join together.

Organic Rouge D’hiver Lettuce

A French heirloom from the 1800s that is commonly used as baby leaf lettuce. However, Rouge d'Hiver forms an amazing head lettuce as well. Cucumbers perform best when grown on 8” tall mounds and provide a trellis to minimize crowding. Shallow roots will benefit from regular watering and a top layer of mulch. Ripe cucumbers are solid green and firm, becoming bitter and yellow if left on the vine too long. Remove fruits with scissors or a knife rather than twisting or plucking to prevent damaging the vine.

 

Organic Red Rubin Basil

This basil variety has unusual reddish-purple leaves, and a stronger flavor than sweet basil, making it most appealing for salads and garnishes. Start basil indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost. Start in plug trays or pellets and place in a warm spot. Make sure soil doesn’t go below 72 degrees during the germination phase, which takes 8 to 14 days. Once seeds sprout, move to a location where there is full sun. Basil plants prefer soil that is moist but not soggy. Pruning the plants before they set flowers will keep the plant producing fresh leaves throughout the season. Prune about once a month.

The way to successfully continue cilantro’s growth is to sow seeds continuously in the spring and fall. Heat causes the plant to begin flowering and setting seed. Water young plants consistently for best growth. Avoid overwatering established plants. Germination takes 2 to 3 weeks and produces rapid leaf growth. Cut back the cilantro frequently for controlled and continuous growth. This plant can be harvested 4 to 5 weeks from the time the seeds are planted.

Start chives outside in early spring as they will germinate in cooler temperatures in 14 days. Warm to temperate seasons are ideal to maintain growth. If you want to plant chives earlier and live in a cold region, start inside 6 to 8 weeks before your average last frost date. Once the seedlings appear, thin the chives to 6 to 8 inches apart.

 

Organic Purple Cherokee Tomatoes

Cherokee Purple is the name of an old variety of tomato that develops a fruit with a deep, dusky-rose color while maintaining a somewhat greenish hue near the stem when mature for eating. Tomato is a warm weather crop best if started indoors about 6-8 weeks prior to final spring frost. Plant 2-3 seeds 1/4” deep per individual cell in fertile, humusy, and well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8. Germinates in 5-14 days, transplanting starts to 1 per pot or 18-36” apart in the garden depending on variety. This indeterminate variety will grow indefinitely through the season, producing non-stop fruit, while requiring trellis support. Although vine-ripened fruit is always preferred, tomatoes can just as easily be harvested early and ripen indoors by being stored in a paper bag or box along with a banana for its ethylene gas. Ripest tomatoes may be pulled from the vine by hand, while more firm ones should be clipped with shears.

Sow seeds indoors 8 weeks before the last frost date. Germination takes from 1 to 2 weeks but is easy to grow from seed indoors. Shrublike and low-growing, common thyme prefers well-drained sandy soil, a sunny location, and once established, needs little water. Keep lightly clipped to delay flowering.

Sow seeds in early April, ¼-inch deep. Germination takes about 2 weeks. Transplant in a full sun location giving the plant room to spread. Space out to ensure good air circulation in areas with high humidity. This herb is also easy to grow from cuttings. If you’re using a pot for its home, make sure it’s at least 12 inches wide. Cut back after flowering for renewed growth and tidiness.

Tomato is a warm weather crop best if started indoors about 6-8 weeks prior to final spring frost. Plant 2-3 seeds 1/4” deep per individual cell in fertile, humusy, and well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8. Germinates in 5-14 days, transplanting starts to 1 per pot or 18-36” apart in the garden depending on variety. This indeterminate variety will grow indefinitely through the season, producing non-stop fruit, while requiring trellis support. Although vine-ripened fruit is always preferred, tomatoes can just as easily be harvested early and ripen indoors by being stored in a paper bag or box along with a banana for its ethylene gas.
